Murano and Burano Islands

Murano occupies five small islands in the lagoon, and as in Venice, the islands are connected by bridges. You can reach Murano by vaporetto. Murano is famous all over the world for its beautiful, hand-blown Venetian glass, mirrors, and optical instruments. Glass manufacturing dates back to the 12th century. There are many small factories lining the main street, and each has a showroom with works of the local artisans. You can also tour the factories and see the glass blowers at work. Murano is also home to a glass museum (Museo Vetraio) where you will find exquisite pieces on display. If you love Murano glass, but don't plan to visit Venice, you can find some beautiful Venetian Glass online. Burano, a very small island with 7000 inhabitants, is situated on four islets in the Venetian lagoon. It is a fishing center, but its claim to fame is its lace. There are many vending stalls that sell lace and linens. The Lace Museum (Museo del Merletto) is located off the beautiful piazza. The houses of Burano are painted beautiful, bright colors. With its many canals, it is like a miniature of Venice.
